Sarah Smith is a tribal member of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) and the Standing Rock Sioux tribe. She has over eighteen years of experience working with Tribal governments, working as former CEO, Assistant CEO, and Grant Specialist of KBIC. Sarah has a Master’s degree in Tribal Administration & Governance from the University of Minnesota Duluth. She has a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Mathematics, with a minor in Physics, from Michigan Technological University. She taught math for eight years prior to working in Tribal government. She is the mother of five children and was born and raised on the L’Anse Indian Reservation located on the shores of Lake Superior. She has demonstrated commitment to working with tribal communities through her past community project work while employed with KBIC. She is the current owner of 8th Fire Consulting, LLC. Her company is a Native American Woman Owned business that is certified by the SBA as a small disadvantaged business. Her company’s vision is to inspire and empower people to build up tribal communities by providing them with knowledge, tools, and support. She is currently a member of the KBIC Committee for Alternative & Renewable Energy (CARE), Constitution Committee, and President of the Baraga School Board.
